September in Austin: Bats, Bites & Bright Nights!

September in Austin: Bats, Bites & Bright Nights!

Summer may be winding down, but September brings the city alive with street festivals, live performances, and community gatherings that show off everything we love about ATX. From bats taking flight at dusk to candlelit concerts and bustling art fairs, there’s no shortage of ways to soak in the new season. It’s a month full of energy, connection, and a little bit of magic.

Community & Connection: Block Parties and Creative Vibes

3rd Annual Teresa Lozano Long Community Day – September 6
A block-party celebration that feels like a thoughtfully curated neighborhood soirée. The Long Center transforms into a playground of KIDosky crafts, BubblePalooza fun (thanks to H‑E‑B), live music, and food trucks—a perfect occasion to mingle and soak in that communal sparkle.

Bat Fest – September 6
As dusk settles, prepare for one of Austin’s most unique rituals: the flight of over 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats from under the Congress Avenue Bridge. Add live music, artisan crafts, and quirky costume contests, and you've got the perfect blend of whimsy and wonder.

Books, Brews & Artistic Expression

Lagers & Literature Book Fair – September 7
This lovely collision of craft beer and indie literature happens at Meanwhile Brewing. Local authors, independent bookstores, printmakers, and even zine-makers converge for a literary-fueled gathering—complete with Typewriter Rodeo poems and handcrafted coasters.

Festivals That Feel Like Home

Fall Pecan Street Festival – September 13
A free, bi‑annual favorite at Hill Country Galleria, this juried arts-and-crafts festival pulses with live music, artisan booths, food, and vibrant local energy—it truly feels like Austin's heart beat out in public.

La Fiesta del Grito de la Independencia de México – September 15
Celebrate the 215th anniversary of Mexican independence in Republic Square Park. Expect folklórico dance, Mariachi Capital, artisan markets, and engaging community resources—a joyful nod to culture, heritage, and shared history.

Downtown Reinvented

VIBE Weekend – September 19 & 20
A brand-new, free downtown showcase along historic Old Sixth Street. Curated by the Downtown Austin Alliance, VIBE Weekend fuses music, art installations, and creative experiences for all ages. Think immersive storytelling meets urban flair.

Art for the Soul

Austin Museum Day – September 21
A day to explore multiple museums across the city for free, celebrating everything from art and history to science and play. A cultured, relaxed way to savor the richness of Austin’s institutions with your favorite people.

“The Wizard of Oz” at Zach Theatre – Through September 21
This isn’t your childhood Dorothy journey—it’s a reimagined Dust Bowl fairytale, with cowboy twang, mirror‑ball sparkle, and that timeless message that there’s truly no place like home.

Philanthropy & Performance

HAAM Benefit DaySeptember 23
Supporting the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians, this city-wide celebration channels live performances and events to ensure Austin’s musicians have access to essential health services. Culture with a cause.

Stephen Mills’ Grimm Tales – September 26–28
At The Long Center, this immersive ballet reinterprets classic fairy tales through dark elegance: a haunting score by Graham Reynolds, provocative artwork by Natalie Frank, and choreography that invites reflection on innocence, darkness, and everything between.

The Art of Music

Levitation Festival – September 25–28
A four-day psychedelic music immersion at Palmer Events Center and downtown venues like Stubb’s, Radio/East, and Mohawk. Expect late‑night magic, artful performances, and that aura of creativity that only Levitation can bring.

From art and music to food, culture, and community, September in Austin reminds us why this city always feels alive. Whether you’re out under the stars at a festival, wandering through a gallery, or simply savoring a night out with friends, this month is packed with experiences that make Austin shine.
