Day Trippin’ - Lockhart’s Local Art & Legendary BBQ

Day Trippin’ - Lockhart’s Local Art & Legendary BBQ

Sometimes when we crave a change of scenery, we venture for a day trip out to the charming and creative heart of Lockhart, Texas. It’s one of those “if you haven’t, then you must” kinda places. Hard to put into words the energy of this small, but mighty town.

Just a 30-mile drive from Austin, Lockhart offers a refreshing escape with a distinct identity and a tight-knit, inclusive community. The town's historic square, alive with galleries, shops, and eateries, is a testament to its evolving character, offering more than just a culinary adventure. Often celebrated for its legendary BBQ joints, Lockhart is carving out a new identity, blending its culinary heritage with a vibrant art scene. This transformation has made Lockhart not just a place to savor some of the best barbecue in Texas but also a nurturing ground for artists, makers, and families alike.

Some people argue that Lockhart is the “new Marfa”. Lockhart's journey into the arts began in earnest around 2016 with the opening of Spellerberg Projects. Marty Spellerberg, the visionary behind this initiative, saw the potential for Lockhart to become a hub for contemporary art, drawing inspiration from his experiences in Toronto. Spellerberg Projects set the stage for a thriving arts community, inspiring both local residents and artists from afar. The gallery's success has sparked a wave of new galleries and creative spaces, transforming the town square into a dynamic cultural district.

The opening of Commerce Gallery further solidified Lockhart's place on the map for art enthusiasts. Co-founded by Donna Blair, Commerce has become more than just a gallery; it's a vibrant gathering spot where art, community, and creativity intersect. Local artists like Christopher St. Leger have found a new platform for their work, enriching Lockhart's cultural tapestry. The gallery's diverse offerings—from visual arts to poetry readings and yoga classes—reflect the community's growing appetite for creative expression. Soon to open, Blair’s new gallery “Get Lucky” is a treat we can’t wait to discover!

Lockhart's transformation into a creative haven is supported by a diverse array of venues and initiatives. From the Lockhart Arts & Craft space, known as "Lockhart's living room," to the innovative 78644 Podcast, the town is alive with music, art, and storytelling. These efforts not only showcase local talent but also foster a sense of belonging and community pride.

While Lockhart shares some parallels with other artistic towns like Marfa, its growth is uniquely grounded in authenticity and community collaboration. The town's evolution from a BBQ stronghold to a creative hub is forging its own path. It stands as a beacon for those seeking to immerse themselves in the arts or simply enjoy a day trip filled with good food, compelling art, and warm hospitality. Next time you’re craving a day trip or celebrating First Fridays, we invite you to explore Lockhart! Until next time, happy exploring!
