Join us as we explore these breathtaking works of art and celebrate the continued tradition of stained glass in Austin.

The University of Texas

The University of Texas Tower, designed by the renowned architect Paul Cret, stands as a central architectural gem of the campus. Among its many artistic features is a stunning stained glass window originally part of the south doorway of the old Main Building. This vibrant window, a gift from the class of 1909, has been beautifully preserved and now enhances the Office of Graduate Studies in the Main Building. The window’s intricate design and historical significance make it a cherished piece of the university's rich artistic heritage.

Saint Mary Cathedral

St. Mary Cathedral, a gothic-style architectural marvel, houses over 20 exquisite stained glass windows crafted by master artisans from Germany and Italy in the early 1900s. These windows, with their dramatic depictions of scenes from the life of Christ and other biblical figures, fill the soaring nave and side chapels with a heavenly glow. Each piece is a testament to the devotion and skill of its creators, transforming the cathedral into a sanctuary of light and story.

The Driskill Hotel

The Driskill Hotel, an epitome of historic luxury, boasts an elegant stained glass dome that crowns its grand staircase. This magnificent dome, adorned with intricate floral motifs in shades of amber and jade, casts a warm, inviting glow over the lobby. The interplay of light and color creates an ambiance of timeless elegance, welcoming guests into a space where history and hospitality intertwine beautifully

The Texas State Capitol

The Texas State Capitol is not only a symbol of governance but also a showcase of artistic brilliance, thanks to its stained glass masterpieces from the renowned Tiffany Studios. Nestled within the rotunda and the library, these ornate windows bring Texas history to life with their vibrant colors and intricate details. Each pane is a narrative, depicting symbolic images that celebrate the state's rich heritage, making every visit a journey through time and artistry.

The Blanton Museum of Art

The Blanton Museum of Art houses a remarkable stained glass installation created by renowned artist Ellsworth Kelly. The piece, titled "Austin," features three large, multi-light windows that cast radiant, shifting colors on the interior surfaces, changing with the sun's position. Created by Franz Mayer of Munich, this hand-blown glass masterpiece is one of the largest of its kind, showcasing Kelly's signature vibrant hues. This installation adds a contemporary yet timeless element to the museum, inviting visitors to experience the dynamic interplay of light and color.

Stained glass is more than just a decorative element; it is a testament to artistry and craftsmanship that transcends time. These installations around Austin are a vivid reminder of how art can transform a space, imbuing it with a sense of history and beauty.
